We had a great time participating in the 1st Annual Spirit of Christmas Tractor Parade! It was fun to put a float together, to spend time with our young friends, and to find a seasonal way to remind our community that even at Christmas, "Farmers Feed Cities"!
Growing naturally is 'the right way' for us.
Sexsmith Farm began developing an Environmental Farm Plan in 2004. More than a commitment to organic crops and methods, sustainability requires holistic consideration of our fields, woodlots, waterways and the community we serve.
Sustainability requires us to explore alternates to inexpensive chemical weed control methods - a gallon of RoundUp would treat 12-18 acres for under $100! Thanks, but no thanks! We'd rather take our chances with our volunteers and "Weeding Wednesday" work parties to improve yields.
Our waterways have been fenced off to create buffer zones to prevent contamination by livestock waste, riparian zones have been planted to reduce erosion and water quality monitored. We have partnered with a group of organic farmers in Southern Ontario to grow and share open-pollinated heritage seeds.
We aim to preserve the heritage of family and community farming.
We believe education is essential to sustainability and we actively pursue community partnerships and opportunities to demonstrate the importance of local agriculture to the economic, cultural and nutritional well-being of our community.
